Choosing a microphone for your voice

There is no reference microphone

The same three or four models come up in every recommendation, and they are genuinely good. The problem sits elsewhere: a microphone flatters some voices and hardens others, and nobody can guess which side you fall on without listening. In the comparisons we run every week, the model finally chosen is rarely the one the customer walked in for. That is not a question of quality, it is a question of match.

The room comes before the gear

Plenty of people change monitors hoping to fix a listening problem that comes from the walls. An untreated room produces peaks and dips far larger than the gap between two decent pairs of speakers. We say so in the shop even when it costs us a sale: a few panels in the right places change the result more than a two-thousand-euro pair standing in the same spot.
